Whether you have a simple home workshop or a larger commercial one, there are specific safety items you should keep to hand. It’s important to protect yourself and the workshop, so don’t put off purchasing these items.
Face Masks
Most workshops have plenty of dust and chemicals flying around in the air, depending on what you’re working on. A mask will help protect your airways and lungs from these irritants and can prevent breathing issues. There are two types of masks you can use, reusable and disposable. The reusable options usually have filters that can be replaced and are good for painting and anything that has strong fumes.
Disposable masks keep the dust and sawdust from getting into your mouth and nose. You should always keep an ample supply on hand.
Fire Extinguishers
Every workshop should have at least one fire extinguisher within easy reach. It’s very possible for items to catch fire or for an electrical fire to break out. If this happens, you must be protected. This is especially true in an area where there are flammable items being worked on.
Safety Glasses
Often overlooked, safety glasses are an essential part of working with metal and wood, or cutting any type of materials. The tiny particles can fly up and hit you in the face. Your eyes are the most vulnerable part of the face, so they should be protected at all times when you’re working on a project. Safety glasses can prevent some pretty awful eye injuries, so be sure to keep extras on hand.
Gloves
Gloves come in a range of options, for different purposes. Latex and nitrile gloves are meant to protect your hands from substances such as paint or chemicals, but the thicker gloves are another option. The work gloves are meant for keeping your hands safe as you work with rougher materials and can help prevent blisters and scrapes.
Heavier leather or canvas gloves work well when handling wood or metal and keep you from being cut or receiving splinters. Everyone can benefit from at least one good pair of work gloves.
First Aid Kit
Anywhere you have people working on potentially dangerous projects, it’s important to have a first aid kit nearby. This will allow you to treat the majority of small injuries. If there’s a bigger issue, you should have the supplies to stabilise the person while the emergency services arrive. Most first aid kits offer what you need.
Staying safe is important for yourself and those in the workshop with you. Provide protection and safety equipment for everyone to help prevent problems.
