Working with tools, you’ll eventually need to replace some things, such as cutting discs. They do wear down and eventually, you’ll need to throw away the old one and set up a new one. How do you know when the disc needs replacing? Here are some signs it’s time for a new one.
It’s Expired
Expired cutting discs may seem silly, since they’re made from metal, but there’s a good reason for the expiration date. The metal may become more brittle over time and could shatter when you use it to cut something hard. Since it’s best to avoid metal shards spraying your workspace, be sure to replace the disc when it’s beyond it’s best by date.
Teeth Have Chipped
If you notice that there are missing or chipped teeth on the disc, it’s time to replace it. This is a sign that it will no longer cut as well and there are more chances of further breakage.
It Makes Noise
When you begin to cut your materials, do you hear a thudding sound? This is usually due to an issue with the cutting disc. It may be that you have missing teeth or the disc could be warped. Any odd noises should be checked out and if in doubt, change the blade. Once you have the new disc installed, listen for the sound. It may be the machine, rather than the disc.
The Saw Vibrates
While the saw will always vibrate somewhat, it’s notable if the vibration is more than the normal amount. This could mean the blade is off centre or has been compromised. This is particularly true if you’ve found it getting stuck as you cut or if you’ve cut something unusually hard with it.
Damage is Visible
Inspect your discs regularly. You shouldn’t see any obvious damage. If there is something that you can see easily, such as chipped areas or cracks, it’s time to get rid of the disc. Using a damaged disc is a good way to end up breaking it in the middle of a project, which can be dangerous.
Cutting is Slowed
When you cut through materials, do you notice that the cutting is slower or messier than usual? If the edges of the cut are not as crisp and you’re noticing that it takes longer and longer to cut through things, you need a new cutting blade.
